Alexander Week In Review: Jan. 5-11
< < Back toIt’s a new year with new opponents for the Alexander boys and girls basketball teams.
After coming back from a long holiday break, the Spartans were ready to get back in action again this week. At the end of the week, both Spartans teams combined to accumulate three wins, after playing two games each.
BOYS
To open the week, the Alexander boys’ team took on Wellston (3-6, 0-4) on Friday, Jan. 3. The freshman, JV, and Varsity teams all walked away with a win. For the varsity boys, this added to their four-game winning streak. With a final score of 71-35, the Spartan boys’ team was ready for a solid game against Jackson the next Friday.
On Friday, Jan. 10, the Spartans beat the Jackson Ironmen 56-36, refusing to let them gain a win on their defeated record. Jackson, who recently lost to Wellston 33-50 on Dec. 28, is now (0-11).
The Alexander boys’ team (7-3, 1-3) will play on the road at Meigs (6-3, 3-0) this Friday, Jan. 17.
GIRLS
The girls’ team started their week off with a 58-49 win over Whiteoak on Saturday, Jan. 4. The Alexander girls have proven they can bring home the win when they match up on the road.
On Thursday, Jan. 9, the girls suffered a tough loss to the undefeated Athens girls’ team. Although the outcome wasn’t exactly what they wanted, the Spartans kept intensity throughout the game.
At halftime, Alexander was trailing with a score of 29-16. Freshman Leah Richardson was the leading scorer at the half with 9 points.
By the end of the third quarter, Athens had gained a 51-25 lead over the Spartans. Alexander would go on to score only 10 more points, which wouldn’t be enough to bring an end to the Lady Bulldogs’ 14-game winning streak. The final score was 62-35.
The Lady Spartans (8-4, 2-3) will face Nelsonville-York (9-3, 3-2) on Monday, Jan. 13, at home.
