The store, located at the Shoppes in Athens, is slated to open in March, the company said in a statement to The Athens Messenger.
Last month, the owner of Shoppes in Athens applied for a state building permit to remodel a vacant space for a Rue21 store at the strip shopping center on East State Street.
Matt Mullens, a spokesman for the Ohio Department of Commerce, said that the permit has been partially approved, including new interior partitions, finishes, lighting and mechanical systems. Still to be approved is the sprinkler system.
On Thursday, construction workers were at the new store site, which is adjacent to Fiesta Salons.
Rue21 operates more than 1,000 stores in 47 states with an aggressive expansion plan to open 120 stores annually, the company said in the statement issued Thursday.
The Rue21 stores currently closest to Athens are in Lancaster, Zanesville and Parkersburg.
