When the RedStorm tip off against Bluefield College on Thursday night, they will be playing for more than just themselves. The University of Rio Grande women’s basketball team will be participating in the “Play 4Kay” initiative for its upcoming game.

The “Play 4Kay” initiative is a movement that provides an opportunity for coaches and teams to raise breast cancer awareness and funds for research. The initiative has raised over $2.8 million to support women’s cancer research since it was founded in 2007.

The University of Rio Grande has been participating by having an ongoing “Penny War” for a week leading up to the game. The competition is going on between different offices within the university.

Pennies collected by a group count for positive points toward the group total. But the values of any other coins or dollar bills placed in the jar are subtracted.

Competing groups may put other coins and dollar bills into each other’s groups to lower their score. The office with the most points wins two free pizzas from Zack and Scotty’s pizza in Rio Grande, Ohio.

The Rio Grande athletic department will also donate half of the gate receipts to the cause. All proceeds will go to the Holzer Center for Cancer Care in Gallipolis.
