West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey is warning residents about a scam involving a false promise of a financial windfall.

Morrisey says a Wirt County resident recently reported receiving a notice in the mail that she had won $4,000. However, to get the reward she would need to advance half of that amount for a "handler's fee." The notice came from "Advance Trust Finance Services."

Morrisey says the resident suspected it was a scam and reported it, but others might not be as aware. He says it's illegal for any company to make you pay a fee to claim a prize, and no legitimate sweepstakes will ever impose such a requirement.

He says anyone receiving such a mailing should call his Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-368-8808.
