Rain Delays Game One As Rio Splits Twin Bill With St. Catharine
< < Back toGame One: Despite a 32-minute rain delay between the first and second innings and being out hit 13-6, the Rio Grande RedStorm came up victorious on Wednesday in the first game of a double header with the St. Catharine Patriots, 9-8.
Heading into the bottom of the seventh, the score was still 8-7. Rio’s Mattie Lanham stepped up to the plate. There were two outs and three runners on base when Lanham dug into a fastball and sent it into center field bringing in two runs to win the game.
RedStorm head coach Kristen Bradshaw rifled through three pitchers to finish off the pesky Patriots (8-11). She took out starting pitcher Tiffany Bise for Katie Noll after Bise gave up nine hits in 3 2/3 innings.
After Noll gave up two earned runs in just 1 1/3 innings pitched, the score was 8-7 and Bradshaw sent in Jenna Jones to relieve Noll. Jones would finish the game with two scoreless innings, allowing no hits.
The Patriots’ bats came alive in the fourth racking up four runs, taking the lead at 6-5 before Rio could stifle their attack.
The RedStorm (10-7) took an early 3-2 lead after the first inning, and extended the lead to 5-2 in the second. They kept that lead through the third.
Ariel Roder led the RedStorm in RBIs with three and was tied for the most hits with two. Taylor Steff led the Patriots with in both categories with three hits and two RBIs.
Game Two: Rio Grande dropped the second of two with St. Catharine, 10-8.
The Patriots relied on a five-run fifth and an extra run for pad in the sixth to topple the RedStorm.
St. Catharine held Rio to only three hits.
