West Virginia University is requiring students to have health insurance next academic year.

The Dominion Post reports that Vice President of Student Affairs Ken Gray says the timing coincides with the fall opening of the new student wellness center on the Evansdale campus.

Now, student fees and a small charge per visit cover the cost of student health.

Starting in the fall, the university will begin billing insurance. That means students will be required to have insurance.

Gray said 85 percent of current students are covered on their own or by their parents.
