A group of lawmakers is calling on the Senate to pass a bill to keep sexual predators out of schools, saying the added security checks on teachers, coaches and bus drivers are needed immediately.

Republican Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey is co-sponsoring a bill that would require states that receive federal education money to conduct periodic background checks. It also seeks to bar schools from hiring employees or contractors convicted of certain offenses.

Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin, of West Virginia, is the other co-sponsor.

The House unanimously passed legislation last year. But the Senate bill remains unmoved in committee.

Toomey was joined by U.S. Reps. Frederica Wilson, of Florida; Mike Fitzpatrick, of Pennsylvania; and Steve Stivers, of Ohio.
