Dayton Shuts Out Ohio, 4-0
< < Back toIt was Dayton junior Ashley Campbell’s night to shine and she did not disappoint, scoring a hat trick to deliver a tough 4-0 loss to the Ohio soccer team in Dayton, Ohio, on Sept. 19.
The Bobcats (3-5-0) looked like the more dominant team early on, getting three shots on goal within the first 10 minutes to seemingly leave the Flyers (3-5-1) on the back foot.
But Dayton, who has played two top 25 teams in the country this season, came back in a major way, launching eight shots to Ohio’s four by the end of the first half.
Campbell opened the scoring by running into the Bobcats’ defensive third in the 23rd minute. She then drifted dangerously towards the right side of the 18-yard box before launching a curling shot into the upper left-hand corner of the goal, giving Ohio senior goalie Nicole Amari no chance.
The feeling in Baujan Field was electric and the home crowd could sense another goal was coming as the Flyers broke once again in the 31st minute. Campbell led the break again and found herself as the recipient of a pass right in front of the Bobcats’ box.
The U-20 Canadian international sent the inhabitants of Baujan into a frenzy, launching a powerful strike from the top of the box and tucking it into the right corner of the goal for Dayton’s second.
Campbell still wasn’t done, using a corner taken by her national teammate, junior Nicole Waters, to smash one into the top of the net from close range. The strike completed her hat trick and sunk the hearts of the traveling Ohio faithful in the 34th minute.
But it got better in the second half for the Bobcats, as they pressured higher up the pitch and suffocated Campbell until her withdrawal in the 70th minute. But Waters put all their good work to rest by stroking one in from the top of the box in the 80th minute to end the Bobcats’ night.
Ohio has Mid-American Conference play to focus on as it prepares to take on the Akron Zips on Friday, Sept. 26.
