Preview: Wellston, Alexander both seek winning records
< < Back to preview-wellston-alexander-both-seek-winning-recordsAlexander (2-2, 0-1) has two objectives on the mind and both can be achieved Friday against Wellston: pick up its first conference win and snap a three-game losing streak.
As for Wellston (2-2, 0-0), a team that began the season with four non-conference games, Friday will mark the first of six consecutive TVC-Ohio matchups. In addition, it will be a litmus test that determines how Wellston will fare in an air-tight conference.
Both teams are coming off of lopsided losses, but winning records are within grasp and this matchup could go a long way in shaping the middle of the conference standings.
After holding an early 3-0 over Athens, the Bulldogs blew the doors wide open and came away with the 55-9 win. Alexander head coach Alex Penrod said that the rout is in the team’s rear view mirror and the focus has been strictly on Wellston.
“We hit the reset button after last week,” Penrod said. “The season is starting fresh.”
Despite Alexander losing its previous two games by a combined 70 points, Penrod insisted that he is stilled pleased with his team’s progress.
“The team is understanding everything and defensively playing really well,” Penrod said.
Alexander failed to score more than 14 points in the last two weeks and for the Spartans to stay in this game, offensive productivity will need to increase. Wellston has scored at least 38 points twice this season.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m from Wellston.
