Recap: Trimble Dominates Wahama 42-0 [w/VIDEO]
< < Back toThe Trimble Tomcats clawed the Wahama White Falcons apart en route to a 42-0 victory in Glouster on Friday night. Justice Jenkins and Austin Downs led the Tomcats on both sides of the ball, combining for five touchdowns.
The game opened up with the teams exchanging blows defensively, struggling to move the ball down the field at all. Trimble (6-0, 5-0 TVC-Hocking) started to take control toward the end of the first quarter with a series of forced turnovers.
Austin Downs then came up with an impressive interception on a tipped pass from Wahama quarterback Kaileb Sheets. While Trimble failed to capitalize on the first turnover, Jenkins was able to take advantage of the second after Terry Simerly forced a fumble on a failed Wahama fourth down conversion and the Tomcats led 7-0.
After a 35-yard touchdown run, the domination of Jenkins and his Tomcats began. The Wahama defense was stout in the first quarter but it seemed like the Tomcats just had another gear. Trimble got better as the game went on and by halftime it seemed like they were just getting started. Jenkins finished with 199 yards rushing with three touchdowns as well as a 61-yard touchdown pass to Downs.
The White Falcons’ (4-2, 4-1) offense was far too one-dimensional for the dominant Trimble defense. Some of the lack of diversity could be blamed on the rain, discouraging the teams from going to the air too much, but even with that it seemed like Wahama ran the same play every time.
Trimble is a team that is similar to Wahama—a defensive minded team with a ground-and-pound offense. But tonight, the Tomcats were able to make the difference with their willingness to take chances. To end the first half, rather than running out the final 10 seconds, the Tomcats went for a double reverse where Justice Jenkins ended up throwing the ball 61 yards to Austins Downs to put them up 28-0 going into the half.
The catch put Downs first in all-time in career receiving yards for the Trimble Tomcats. In addition to his two receptions for 65 yards, Downs also started the scoring in the third with a punt return for touchdown as well as his top-play-worthy interception.
The Tomcats travel to Racine to take on the Southern Tornadoes (3-3, 2-2) next week, while Wahama will host the Eastern Eagles.
