< < Back toEven after a late start to the basketball season, the Athens Bulldogs have not seemed to skip a beat as they opened their season with three consecutive wins, outscoring their opponents 212-108.
The Bulldogs season started off well as they defeated Meigs 71-32 on Dec. 12, only eight days after losing in the state championship football game.
Senior Joe Burrow did not show any signs of rust as he put up 19 points on the night and hit five 3-pointers. Sophomore guard Griffin Lutz also put up 19 points on the night while the Luehrman twins, Ryan and Adam, combined for 23 points.
The Bulldogs dominated the entire game as they were up big at halftime 36-13 and never looked back in the following two quarters. Athens lost star forward Ibi Watson as he transferred to Pickering Central this season, but the Bulldogs did not seem to skip a beat in their season opener.
Athens went on the road Dec. 16 and defeated Wellston in dominating fashion, 78-28.
It was again big night for senior Joe Burrow as he not only put up 24 points, but he also scored his 1,000th point in his Bulldog career.
The Bulldogs played extremely well on both ends of the court as they grabbed their second win of the season and second win by a margin of 30 or more points.
The Bulldogs continued their road trip on Dec. 19 as they beat Vinton County 63-48.
Athens struggled as they were trailing in the third quarter but ended the night on a 26-9 run. Griffin Lutz and Joe Burrow both picked up their fourth foul before the third quarter ended which only added to the struggle.
Even though Burrow was in foul trouble he still was able to put up 22 points and five rebounds. Ryan Luehrman and Griffin Lutz both chipped in 11 points on the night.
With the win, the Bulldogs remained a perfect 3-0 on the season.
