Athens High Students Pull In Scholarships
< < Back to athens-high-students-pull-in-scholarshipsTwenty-four Athens High School students received McClure Scholarships and awards at a recent ceremony.
Scholarship recipients were: Kaitlin Baker, Emmalyn Brown, Janelle Brannan, Shannon Finnearty, Danila Grijalva, Ashton Horsley, Brandon Niese and Princess Queena Prince.
The colleges they plan to attend, and the fields of study they plan to pursue are: Kaitlin — Ohio State University, biology; Emmalyn — University of Iowa, creative writing and French; Janelle — Kings College (United Kingdom), international relations; Shannon — OSU, international business; Daniela — Indiana University Bloomington, political science; Ashton — MacAlester College, international relations; Brandon — Ohio Universit, physics engineering; Queena — OSU, international studies.
The Brandon Tad Grover, Jr Founders Scholarship was awarded to Serena Zhu, who plans to study computer science at Dartmouth College. Serena also earned the Dr. Edward Sprague Leadership Award.
The Richard P. Herdman Athletic Hall of Fame Scholarships were awarded to Olivia Harris and Bryce Graves. Olivia plant to attend Otterbein University, and Bryce plans to study criminal justice at OU.
Ryan Mack and Nathan Rickey both were granted the Donald R. Poston Award. Ryan plans to major in engineering at OU, and Nathan plans to study athletic training at OU. Ryan also was the initial winner of the Don and Mary Eskey Award, a new award given to a high-achieving football player.
G. Kenner and Margene Bush provided money to assist Athens graduating seniors in such fields as technical and service trades. Bush Opportunity Scholarships went to Tyler Bailey-Wurth, Jordan Dean and Jessica Hammonds. All plan to attend Hocking College, with Tyler enrolling in the physical therapy assistant program, Jordan in music management, and Jessica in nursing.
Winners of the Olivia Gray Sole Fine Arts Scholarship were Emma Fenstermaker and Jesus Sanchez Alvarez. Emma plans to attend the University of Iowa and and major in English and sociology, and Jesus plans to major in fine arts at OU. Emma also was presented with the Betty Hoyt Fuller Creative Writing Award, as well as the Anne Pickering Outstanding Senior English Award.
Ashton Horsley was presented with the Betty Miziko Outstanding Senior Social Studies Award.
Dirk Roosenburg earned the Carl and Helen Roberts Music Award. The Carl and Helen Roberts Social Studies Award went to Alexander Armstrong. Both are juniors at Athens High School.
The 1983 Award is a monetary prize for a senior entering the Armed Forces other than the National Guard or an academy. DeShawn Horton was recognized and will be entering the Marines in July.
Chauncey-Dover Awards were presented to Tiffany Canter, Shannon Finnearty and Alexandra Mattey. Tiffany plans to attend OU and study nursing, and Allie plans to study marketing at OU.
Shannon Finnearty and Princess Queena Prince also earned Herman Humphrey awards.
The Nolan Patterson Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student who will be pursuing a career in theater. Camila Benencia-Courreges was awarded this scholarship and plans to attend OU’s Honors Tutorial College in the area of theater.
J. Warren McClure, a 1937 graduate of Athens High School, donated $50,000 after his 50th high school reunion to provide scholarships to students. His donation inspired others to donate money to fund students for extracurricular activities at different academic levels. These awards are made possible by people who want to encourage and reward the academic achievements and talents of Athens High School students.
