COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Democrats in the Ohio Senate say they plan to offer changes to the state budget to allow independent home health care and child-care workers under contract with the state to unionize.

Their proposal comes after Republican Gov. John Kasich on Friday rescinded a pair of directives issued by his predecessor that allowed those workers to unionize.

Democrat Sen. Capri Cafaro of Hubbard said the move was wrong for Ohio. She says she and her colleagues will seek to restore the collective bargaining rights in an amendment to the proposed $71.5 billion, two-year state budget.

Her comments came Tuesday at a Senate Finance Committee meeting where the panel’s subcommittee leaders gave their reports on budget hearings.

The sweeping spending measure funds state operations for the two years beginning July 1.
