Athens Man Kills Self After Indictment On Child Porn Charges

An Athens man who was indicted Monday with a 122-count indictment related to child pornography took his own life that same day.
Jeffrey Shira, 60, of Old Route 33, died at his residence. Deputies with the Athens County Sheriff’s Office responded to the address Monday afternoon in reference to a gunshot wound.
The indictment issued that morning included 50 counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material or performance, second-degree felonies; 50 counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material or performance, fifth-degree felonies; 10 counts of pandering obscenity involving a minor, fourth-degree felonies; six counts of pandering sexually-oriented material involving a minor, second-degree felonies; and six counts of pandering sexually-oriented material involving a minor, fourth-degree felonies.
