Two Hamden residents are in custody in connection with the death of a Jackson area man from a suspected heroin overdose.

David P. Barton, 55, and Teresa A. Johnson, 54, were arrested on two counts of trafficking in drugs and one count each of acting in a pattern of corrupt activity, corrupting another with drugs leading to the serious physical harm of an individual, possessing drug abuse instruments and cultivating marijuana, according to a release by the Vinton County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies executed a search warrant at the pair’s Hamden residence after receiving a call from the Wellston Police Department regarding a man who had overdosed on heroin and was unresponsive.

The man was identified as Josh Williams, 34, who was brought to the Wellston Fire Department after overdosing. He was then taken by ambulance to the Holzer Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, according to the news release.

“During the investigation by deputies with the Vinton County Sheriff’s Office, it was alleged that the heroin was purchased at the residence of Barton and Johnson in Vinton County,” Sheriff Shawn Justice stated in the release.

During the execution of the search warrant, deputies allegedly found two kinds of suspected heroin, along with money and “drug abuse instruments”

The investigation is still ongoing and will be sent to Vinton County Prosecutor Trecia Kimes-Brown for review. A bond hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.
