Jackson Takes Down Wellston In Andy Hall’s 50th Career Win
< < Back to jackson-takes-down-wellston-in-andy-halls-50th-career-winThe Ironmen had a great running game against the Golden Rockets in Andy Hall’s 50th career win as Jackson’s head coach. The Ironmen defeated Wellston 41-20 Saturday night.
Jackson dominated all night on the ground, as it was a running back by committee type of performance as coach Hall said heading into the season. Johnny Farley, Blake McCoy and Raymon Potter all helped out quarterback Hunter Sexton. McCoy had 151 yards on only 11 rushes and a touchdown. Sexton added 102 rushing yards with a score of his own.
Sexton added in three passing touchdowns and finished the game with 123 total yards. As good as Sexton was Saturday night, he and his center Jerrit Crosier were not on the same page. The two had eight fumbled snaps, two of which were recovered by Wellston.
Wellston was able to force four turnovers but didn’t convert on any of them. This might have been because they are running a wing-T offense for the first time ever. Wellston only had about 300 yards of total offense.
The Golden Rockets had their opportunities to get into the game, as Jackson didn’t come out firing. The Ironmen only had one touchdown in the first quarter and led 7-0.
Wellston found it very difficult moving the ball against the tough Jackson defense. However, trailing 14-0 Brayden Womeldorf had two huge pass plays,a 45-yard pass followed by a 34-yard pass. Womeldorf then ran it in for the one-yard score, but the Golden Rockets missed the extra point.
Wellston had a golden opportunity to get back in the game as one of the fumbled snaps fell to them on the Ironmen’s 22-yard line. On a fourth and one, the Ironmen defense stood strong and stopped the Golden Rockets for a loss on the play.
Jackson really took over from that point on, McCoy racked up 81-yards rushing on just two plays that resulted in an Ironmen touchdown, putting them up 20-6 with 6:38 left in the second quarter.
Not long after, Conley took the ball on a direct snap from a fake punt to the house to give Jackson a 27-6 lead, which is the lead they took into halftime.
The second half was much of the same as the first as Jackson scored about half way through the third quarter to put them up 34-6.
Wellston scored on a Womeldorf 80-yard run to cut the Jackson lead to 22 with 3:42 left in the third. The quarterback finished with 265 total yards and two touchdowns. Jackson added another touchdown after that to put the score at 41-12 going into the fourth quarter.
The Ironmen controlled the fourth quarter and look to win two-straight games as they face Chillicothe on Friday at 7 p.m.
The Golden Rockets travel to Hunington looking to pick up their first win of this early season at 7 p.m.
