State Cautions Schools About Barricade Devices
< < Back to state-cautions-schools-about-barricade-devicesCOLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Ohio’s building standards board is cautioning schools against buying or installing barricade devices meant to stop active shooters until rules are developed for use of the devices.
The board says that while a change in state law now allows for such devices, not all of them may comply with the rules which are due by March.
The board alerted schools and colleges to the rule process in a Wednesday letter obtained by The Associated Press.
A law pushed by schools and device manufacturers went into effect earlier this summer prohibiting the state fire code from banning such devices.
Backers say the devices provide another layer of security. Some security experts and fire marshals say they’re difficult to use under stress and could endanger people inside a classroom.
