Lawmakers Tackle Charter School Bills After Scandal, Ruling< < Back to
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Recent charter school developments put additional pressure on Ohio lawmakers trying to tighten regulation of the schools via pending legislation.
Last month’s ouster of Ohio’s charter schools director after he acknowledged manipulating poor-performing schools’ evaluations has drawn the attention of state authorities.
Some state school board members sought unsuccessfully on Tuesday for an independent investigation of the state’s charter schools oversight office because of the manipulation and other charter school scandals.
Ohio Supreme Court Justice Judith Lanzinger said in a court ruling the same day that lawmakers need to decide whether tougher charter school regulations are needed.
Separate bipartisan bills cracking down on the publicly funded, privately operated schools are pending in the Republican-controlled Legislature.
