Wheelersburg Subdues Zane Trace
< < Back to wheelersburg-subdues-zane-traceAfter making it to their first ever regional final, the No. 2 Zane Trace Pioneers season fell at the hands of No. 1 Wheelersburg 31-0.
Wheelersburg was able to control the clock through a hard-nosed running game, powered by running back Jordan Howard and quarterback Kyle Davis. The duo combined for 166 yards and four touchdowns on 26 rushes.
On Davis’s second touchdown, the Pirates received the ball on their own 20-yard line, and in three minutes and 36 seconds with all rushes, Wheelersburg scored to give the team a 14-0 lead heading into half. The Pirates kept their foot on the gas in the second to close out the game.
Despite the lopsided scoreline, the Pioneers did have their opportunities, but made several costly mistakes.
On two separate occasions, Zane Trace had 3rd-and-short plays, but quarterback Austin Harris dropped one snap, and made a bad pitch on another play. These two plays stopped long drives that took the Pioneers deep into Pirates territory.
Joel Dunkle and Truman Love found running lanes extremely difficult to get through and failed to muster up much of anything. They combined for only 93 yards.
Wheelersburg will be march on to the State Final Four.
