Michaela Puckett and Samantha Thompson’s double-digit scoring led the Vinton County Lady Vikings to force the Nelsonville-York Lady Buckeyes first loss of the season in overtime 58-48.

Nelsonville-York head coach Doug Whiteman thought it was a combination of poor offense and not making free-throws that led to the Lady Buckeye defeat.

“The game plan was to make them guard, but our movement was just not good,” Whiteman said. “We just need to settle down more.”

With the offense not being on all cylinders, the Lady Buckeyes used their defense to keep them in the game, forcing 22 total turnovers. Sophomore guard Jessie Addis was the catalyst behind the Nelsonville-York defense totaling with six steals.

Puckett was expected to shine for the Lady Vikings, but Thompson was the eye-opener for Vinton County. Finishing with 15 points and eight rebounds, she lived up to the hype coach Rod Bentley had for her at the beginning of the season.

“You won’t find a more physical presence in the TVC than Samantha Thompson,” Bentley said.

The Nelsonville-York Lady Buckeyes will hope to settle down more against another TVC opponent in River Valley on December 11th. The Lady Vikings looks to build their momentum later this week when they travel to Warren on December 10th.
