COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Officials say 15 rural school districts and their communities will share about $2 million from the sale of timber from Ohio’s state forests.

Through the state’s “Trees to Textbooks” initiative, a portion of the revenue generated from Ohio’s forest management program goes to the county, townships and school districts where the activity took place.

Scioto (sy-OH’-tuh) County saw the most money, with nearly $737,000 going to its schools and townships.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says the program provides an opportunity for communities to benefit from the natural resources found right in their backyards. The department’s Division of Forestry is responsible for the care of nearly 200,000 acres of state forests.
