School District Agrees To Address Civil Rights Concerns

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) – An agreement between a northwestern Ohio school district and a federal education agency outlines how the district will address questions about the treatment of minority students.
Under an agreement announced Thursday by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, Toledo Public Schools will evenly assign experienced teachers throughout the district and post nondiscrimination notices.
The district must also ensure that students between kindergarten and eighth grade can equally access school libraries and check out books.
All high schoolers must be able to take distance-learning courses. Outreach activities have to be performed to monitor resource distribution.
If the district’s efforts still do not ensure equality, the federal agency must approve any revised policies and practices.
The district says it has already addressed most of the issues.
