Bill Would Make Sales Tax Holiday Permanent, Annual Event

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – A central Ohio lawmaker says he wants to make the state’s sales tax holiday permanent and an annual event.
Sen. Kevin Bacon, a Franklin County Republican, tells The Columbus Dispatch that he’s received positive feedback from retailers and the public after the state’s first tax holiday. Bacon introduced a bill on Monday that would make the holiday permanent.
The three-day tax break in August applied to clothing and footwear items under $75 as well as for classroom supplies that cost $20 or less. Items priced higher weren’t eligible for the tax savings.
There are currently no numbers that show the holiday’s impact. A state Department of Taxation spokesman says the agency is working on crunching the numbers. It is not known when that will be released.
