FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) – A bill aimed at expanding early voting to include any registered voter in Kentucky has been advanced by a House committee with the backing of Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes.

Grimes told lawmakers Monday that widespread early voting would increase participation. The bill was approved by the House Elections, Constitutional Amendments and Intergovernmental Affairs Committee.

The bill would allow early voting by any registered voter in Kentucky at least 12 working days before the Sunday prior to Election Day. The early-voting period would include two Saturdays.

Grimes says a majority of county clerks’ offices in Kentucky are open on Saturday.

Currently, absentee balloting ahead of an election is allowed for voters who are gone from their home counties on Election Day or have other valid excuses.
