OU Welcomes Renowned Art Scholar, Curator March 10
< < Back toThe Ohio University School of Art + Design will present a lecture by visiting scholar Bartholomew Ryan, an independent curator working in Pittsburgh, PA. His public lecture will take place at 5 p.m. in Mitchell Auditorium, Seigfred Hall, on Thursday, March 10.
Ryan will discuss his curatorial practice working with a large art organization, the Walker Art Center, and his choices for becoming an independent curator based in Pittsburgh. He will address the career path, as well as what curators look for in artists and how an exhibition is conceived.
Of his practice, he states, “Most obviously, we (curators) are the intermediaries between three contingencies: the artist, the institution and the public”.
Ryan was recognized by the art magazine Apollo in last year’s “40 Under 40 USA” issue, named among “the most talented and inspirational young people who are driving forward the art world today.”
Ryan is an independent curator based in Pittsburgh, previously serving as assistant curator at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, where he co-curated the ambitious new historical exhibition International Pop (2015). He also recently co-curated the performance exhibition Scaffold Room by choreographer and artist Ralph Lemon.
In 2013, Ryan curated 9 Artists, a multigenerational group exhibition and accompanying catalogue that considered the changing role of the artist in contemporary culture, which opened at the Walker before traveling to the MIT List Visual Arts Center. Prior to that, he co-curated Painter Painter (2013); Pedro Reyes’ Baby Marx (2011); Goshka Macuga: It Broke from Within (2010); and Eiko & Koma’s Naked (2010).
Ryan holds an MA from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College (2009) and has contributed writing to a variety of international publications.
