BARNESVILLE, Ohio (AP) – Crews are working to clean up thousands of gallons of drilling wastewater that spilled into an Ohio reservoir after a truck hauling the toxic water overturned.

Barnesville Fire Chief Bob Smith tells The Columbus Dispatch that the truck crashed early Wednesday, sending about 5,000 gallons of wastewater into a field, a creek and eventually into one of the village’s reservoirs. The driver was taken to a hospital with injuries that aren’t life-threatening.

Smith says the reservoir has been closed as the state Environmental Protection Agency tests the water.

He says the truck was hauling waste from a well in Monroe County owned by Gulfport Energy. The Oklahoma-based oil and gas company couldn’t be reached.

Smith says it will take a couple of days for crews to clean up the spill.
