Ohio’s Election Laws Under Scrutiny As Focus Shifts To Fall
< < Back toCOLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Some rules for Ohio voters are under scrutiny as the focus in the key swing state starts shifting toward fall.
One lawsuit awaiting a federal judge’s decision challenges several election-related policies including the elimination of “golden week,” the days in which Ohioans could both register and vote at the same time.
Separately, another federal judge is hearing a dispute over changes to absentee and provisional ballot requirements passed by state lawmakers in 2014. Advocates for Ohio’s homeless and the state’s Democratic Party claim Ohio has created hurdles for voters, though the state says the challenged laws are reasonable and impose a minimal burden.
Another lawsuit involves the accessibility of paper absentee ballots to blind Ohio voters. A federal judge has set an April trial in that case.
