‘Open Carry’ Gun Walk to Take Place at Miami University
< < Back toOXFORD, Ohio (AP) – A group of students and gun advocates plans to openly carry guns on the campus of Miami University in southwest Ohio.
The Cincinnati Enquirer reports the event planned April 30 aims to educate people about firearms and open carry laws. The event’s leader, Jeff Smith, has organized “open carry” walks at Ohio State and other Ohio colleges.
Smith is encouraging participants to bring long guns and pistols. State law allows people to carry weapons openly on public property, but it’s illegal to carry a firearm on many college campuses, including Miami’s.
Weapons aren’t allowed in residence halls or university buildings. Participants say they won’t enter school buildings.
The school says it won’t take disciplinary action against students who plan to participate.
Campus police will be present to promote safety.
