COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Forty-four people have applied to be Ohio’s next superintendent, including Gov. John Kasich’s former education adviser.

The list of applicants was released Wednesday by the state Department of Education and includes educators, professionals and a law lecturer based in the Cayman Islands. The deadline to apply was midnight Friday.

Kasich’s former adviser Robert Sommers is among five finalists for the job. Other finalists include a former education dean at the University of Dayton and the chief accountability and performance officer at the Delaware Department of Education.

The state Board of Education is expected to begin interviews next month and plans to hire Richard Ross’ successor in May for June. Associate Superintendent Lonnie Rivera is serving as the interim superintendent and has said he isn’t interested in the permanent position.
