AKRON, Ohio (AP) – Documents show a federal appeals court has forced an Ohio judge to remove himself from a case involving a defendant who claims he often used heroin with the judge’s brother and nephew.

John Adams, a federal judge in Akron, was forced to step aside after Eric Ramey wrote in a petition to the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that he used heroin and opiates with the Adams’ family members every day for 14 months. The appeals court ruled this week.

Ramey was in front of Adams on charges of creating and passing counterfeit money at Holmes County businesses. When Ramey brought the information to Adams’ attention, the judge said he was estranged from that part of his family and refused to step aside.
