Walking Tour of the Historic Athens Asylum Offered
< < Back to walking-tour-of-the-historic-athens-asylum-offeredA walking tour of the former Athens Asylum (now known as The Ridges) will be offered on Sunday, June 19 2 – 4 p.m. George Eberts, long time Asylum employee and local expert on the Athens Asylum, will be leading the outdoor walking tour of the Athens Asylum grounds and buildings. His insights on patient treatment throughout the asylum’s 140-year existence are peppered with stories, personal anecdotes and hidden locations throughout the grounds.
Visitors will learn the history of the famed Kirkbride building, the various cottages, amusement hall and other old structures. They will also see the landscaped grounds, historic cemeteries and discuss the evolution of mental health treatment from the inception of this storied institution until its closure a quarter century ago.
Tickets are $15 and spaces are limited.
