COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Visitors to the Ohio Statehouse will see increased security procedures beginning next month.

People who work or do business in the public building must use their statehouse ID cards to pass through new security turnstiles starting July 5.

The advisory board that oversees the Capitol grounds said Thursday the turnstiles will be installed at three of the building’s entrances. Those without the state-issued ID cards will continue to go through metal detectors, which were put in place last year.

The Capitol Square Review and Advisory Board calls the security upgrade “a proactive measure” to bolster the safety of those who work and visit the building.

More than 200,000 people visit the capitol annually, and hundreds work there.
