Cranberry Bog Not Harmed By Low Dam Levels

ON CRANBERRY BOG, Ohio (AP) – A park official says the unusual bog surrounded by central Ohio’s Buckeye Lake doesn’t seem to have been harmed by the water being kept low there for over a year amid work to replace a deteriorated dam.

The fragile, roughly 10-acre Cranberry Bog has been shrinking for decades as the lake and waves encourage natural decomposition. When officials decided to lower the water last year, Department of Natural Resources staff worried the bog might stick out of the water if it couldn’t compress enough.

A department administrator for natural areas says the bog seems to be sticking out slightly, but there’s no sign of significant damage and the plants look good.

Officials have agreed to let the lake fill more to accommodate boating and fishing, but that depends on rainfall, which has been lacking.
