CLEVELAND (AP) – The U.S. surgeon general says more treatment facilities must be opened in Ohio to help opioid addicts overcome a disease that has already killed many Ohioans.

Vivek Murthy made the comments during a visit to St. Vincent Charity Medical Center in Cleveland. The facility has inpatient and outpatient services to treat opioid addicts.

Murthy says plans for medication-assisted treatment centers are often met with resistance but drugs can be effective tools in battling addiction. He says more lives can be saved if they’re introduced to this “evidence-based treatment.”

The surgeon general’s visit is part of a campaign to push health care professionals to reform their opioid prescribing methods.
