A man discovered a decomposing body at a residence in Nelsonville on Friday while checking on his friend.

Athens County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to 13029 Carr Road when they were told a body had been found.

“The caller stated to dispatch that he went to check on his friend and found a decomposing body on the ground near the residence,” according to a report from the sheriff’s office.

The body was reportedly “badly decomposing,” and was found along with several cultivated marijuana plants, according to investigators.

“The body is believed to be that of the occupant of the residence, however, identification has not been made at this point,” the report stated.

Sheriff Rodney Smith told the Athens Messenger that foul play is not suspected, but that an investigation is ongoing into the case.

Detectives and members of the Athens Major Crimes Unit were contacted along with the Athens County Coroner’s Office.

A call to the coroner’s office was not returned as of Tuesday morning.
