Ohio’s Unemployment Rate Down in June from Previous Month

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – State officials say Ohio’s unemployment rate was down in June compared with the previous month, while up from a year ago.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services says the state’s jobless rate was 5 percent in June, down from 5.1 percent in May. But more Ohioans were unemployed in June compared with the same month last year, when the unemployment rate was 4.8 percent. The number of unemployed increased by 17,000 in the past 12 months to 291,000 last month.

The nation’s unemployment rate rose to 4.9 percent in June, up from 4.7 percent in May, but down from 5.3 percent a year ago.

Ohio sectors reporting job gains over the month included construction and manufacturing. Losses were reported in mining and logging and educational and health services.
