CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The state has approved a contract exemption for a more than $54,000 loan made by Rowlesburg Mayor Barbara Banister to her city that was used to pay a town bill. Media outlets report the State Ethics Commission granted Rowlesburg the exemption Thursday to allow it to repay Banister. Although the Ethics Act prohibits local governments from entering into contracts with elected officials or ranking employees, the commission is allowed to make exemptions.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia is receiving $17 million in federal money to help recover from deadly flooding over the summer. The funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant-Disaster Recovery program was announced by West Virginia lawmakers on Friday.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — About 12,500 union coal miner retirees are receiving letters saying they’ll lose their health benefits on Dec. 31 without congressional action. The Patriot Voluntary Employee Beneficial Association shipped the letters last week. The 12,500 affected United Mine Workers of America retirees. A congressional bill would protect health-care and pension benefits for about 120,000 former miners and their families.
