COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Central Ohio health officials say the number of people who have contracted a worrisome diarrheal disease this year has nearly reached 1,000.

The Columbus Dispatch reports Columbus Public Health Department officials say the outbreak of cryptosporidiosis – commonly called “crypto” – that began this summer in central Ohio has slowed but cases are still being reported.

The outbreak first detected in July is Ohio’s largest-ever. Some 50 people have been hospitalized, with no deaths reported.

Cryptosporidiosis is a microscopic parasite spread through feces and human contact. Swimming pools are one source for the disease.

Officials say people diagnosed with crypto should stay home from work or school, frequently wash their hands with soap and water and clean home surfaces with hydrogen peroxide.
