ATHENS – A Glouster man was killed in a Thursday crash in Athens County

Fred Cavey, 81, was stopped on the berm of U.S. Route 50 westbound at about 1:40 p.m. when he was struck and killed by a Rumpke refuse truck driven by Ivan W.M. Bowman, 54, of McArthur, according to a release by the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Athens Post.

“Mr. Cavey had stopped his 2003 Dodge Dakota on the berm to adjust or secure the load when he was struck by a Rumpke refuse truck that drove off the road and onto the berm,” the release stated.

When the truck struck the Dakota, it forced the vehicle into Tyler Sikorski, 23, also of Glouster, who was also standing next to the vehicle. Sikorski suffered minor injuries, according to officials.

Cavey was pronounced dead by a member of the Athens County Coroner’s Office while still at the scene of the crash.

Sikorski was taken to OhioHealth O’Bleness Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released, the release stated.

While the crash is still under investigation, investigators say alcohol is not suspected to be a factor. No charges were specified in the release.
