Stuart’s Opera House will host Southeast Ohio’s Poetry Out Loud regional semifinal on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 1:30 p.m. at 52 Public Square in Nelsonville, OH. The top scoring contestants from this year’s six Ohio regional semifinalists will be designated as state finalists and will be invited to compete in the Poetry Out Loud State Finals in Columbus on Saturday, March 4. The regional semifinal will feature students from Athens High School, Logan-Hocking High School, John Glenn High School (New Concord), and Southern High School (Racine). In addition to the school competition the afternoon will feature a poetry reading from Wendy McVicker, our Poet in Residence and POL regional co-coordinator, and readings from our Creative Writing for Seniors class.

Poetry Out Loud encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. Created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, Poetry Out Loud is administered in partnership with the State Arts Agencies of all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. Teachers, librarians, or administrators register their high schools each year with the Ohio Arts Council and organize contests with one class, several classes, or a whole school. Contests, workshops, and multi-media program materials, including curricula, are free. Poetry Out Loud is aligned with Common Core and NCTE standards.

This event is free and open to the public and will take place at Stuart’s Opera House, 52 Public Square in Nelsonville, Ohio. For more information visit stuartsoperahouse.org or call 740-753-1924.
