Ohio Holds On For Win Against USC Upstate
< < Back to ohio-holds-on-for-win-against-usc-upstateIf the Ohio Bobcats wanted to earn a win against a very good USC Upstate team, they would have to strike early. Shortstop Alex Day must have known this, because she launched a solo home run in the first inning to get the ‘Cats rolling and they did not look back, taking the game 3-2 over the Spartans.
Day had herself quite a day. In the next inning, she did more damage by knocking in two runs on a single with the bases loaded to put the Bobcats up 3-0 early on.
For senior Savannah Jo Dorsey, that was plenty of run support to keep the Spartans at bay. She pitched a complete game, struck out eight Spartans and allowed two runs. This is the senior’s ninth win of the season.
However, she might have had a sigh of relief once the bottom of the sixth concluded. USCU started off the inning with a double and single, putting runners on first and third with no outs. Dorsey got a strike out but a pop up from USCU allowed the runner from third to score with the tying run still on first. To add some pressure, Dorsey walked a batter to put the go-ahead run on first, but the Spartans were unable to capitalize as they grounded back to Dorsey, getting out of the jam. This was the biggest threat the Spartans had to get ahead all game.
This was one of the final games before conference play and Ohio will participate in the College of Charleston Tournament Saturday and Sunday. Saturday they will take on Western Carolina before wrapping it up on Sunday with the College of Charleston.
