Scott Woods, Ivars Balkits to Appear at May Spoken and Heard

The Dairy Barn Arts Center is pleased to announce the lineup for our May Spoken and Heard poetry event, featuring Scott Woods and Ivars Balkits.

The event is May 24, 2018 at 6 p.m. in the Sauber Gallery. This is a free event, with a cash bar and poetry books by local and guest poets available for purchase. This series is organized by Kari Gunter-Seymour Peterson, Athens Poet Laureate and Secretary of the Dairy Barn Arts Center Board of Directors.

The featured poet for the evening is Scott Woods from Columbus, Ohio. He is recognized throughout the US and was the President of Poetry Slam Inc. and emcees the Writers’ Block Poetry Night, an open mic series in Columbus, Ohio. Woods is the recipient of the 2017 Columbus Makes Art Excellence Award.

Scott Woods is the author of Prince and Little Weird Black Boy Gods (2017), Urban Contemporary History Month (2016) and We Over Here Now (2013), and has published or edited work in a variety of publications and platforms. He has been featured multiple times in national press, including multiple appearances on National Public Radio.

The opening local poet for the event is Ivars Balkits from Athens has published prose and poetry in many online literary journals and print anthologies. He was recipient of a 1999 Individual Artist Fellowship in poetry and a 2014 Individual Excellence Award in creative nonfiction, both from the Ohio Arts Council.
