Shannon Lay opened up the 2018 Gladden House Sessions on Thursday, May 31, day one of the 2018 Nelsonville Music Festival.

Having spent her teenage years in Redondo Beach, CA, Lay started playing guitar at 13 and may be known best for playing in West Coast-based garage rock/punk outfit Feels. Lay is an outspoken Simpsons fan, as well as a snazzy dresser, sporting a stylish tank top adorned with Gary Panter’s Jimbo during her Gladden House set. She spoke briefly with host Josh Antonuccio about her current creative inspirations, which include true crime podcasts Last Podcast On The Left and My Favorite Murder.

Lay opened her set with the yet-to-be released “Death Up Close.” Lay followed this with “Recording 15” from her 2017 release Living Water (Mare Records).

Lay closed her set with a stunning cover of Karen Dalton’s “Something On Your Mind.” Lay’s music draws stylistically from the likes of Dalton and other cult folk figures such as Nick Drake and Vashti Bunyan, making the melancholy cover a fitting end to her session.
