The Big Sandy Regional Detention Center said in a statement to news outlets that correction officers at the jail in Paintsville found a hole chiseled in a shower room wall during a routine security check on Monday. Jail Administrator Pete Grigsby said the inmates didn’t get close to escaping since the jail has another double wall with 12-inch blocks on the other side.
Officials said the inmates used pieces of metal taken from a shelf in a cell to chip away at the wall.
Paintsville Police Officer Zach Mitchell says nine inmates are being charged with escape.
