< < Back to this-week-on-radio-free-athens-november-10-2018Every weekend local music geeks unite to provide the region with 11 hours of creatively curated tunes on WOUB 1340AM, an endeavor that is known commonly as Radio Free Athens! Typically the program runs from 9 a.m. EST to 8 p.m. EST every Saturday, and can also be heard through this link.
Here is a list of the DJs slated to play on Saturday, November 10:

12 p.m. to 3 p.m. – Art Cromwell
3 p.m. to 6 p.m. – Mackenzie Ellis

CAUSE I FOUND OUT LOVE JUST AIN’T ENOUGH I NEED DEVOTION TO BACK IT UP
My friends, I’m back from my long hiatus, a time full of vacations and celebrations of my old man’s 30th birthday. Although those trips certainly weren’t as record store-centric as my usual travels, we did happen upon Daddy Kool Records in St. Petersburg, FL, an institution that, for whatever reason, happened to have sealed, brand new (seemingly) copies of Captain Beefheart’s Safe As Milk and Vintage Violence by John Cale for FIVE DOLLARS EACH (on CD). I also picked up a totally unmarred copy of Nils Lofgren’s self titled “Fat Man” album, which is the album that has the classic “Back It Up,” which I quote above, because I’ve belted along to this song more times than I can count.
I like this record for a lot of reasons, obviously the music is fantastic, and I love the cover — my parents, who will be celebrating their 28th wedding anniversary this December famously got engaged outside of the incredibly politically incorrect “freak show” tent at the Ohio State Fair in 1990. I want to emphasize that my parents felt more akin to the performers in this instance than the audience, just to clarify what kind of people they are. I’ll have tunes to play, disparaging things to say about a certain pop star who will remain unnamed who I have deep personal qualms with (I feel much the same way about this hair extension-ed, photo-shopped, vapid lady that people feel about Kanye West, i.e. profound, irrational dislike) whose songwriting and musical team have apparently put out a good song recently that I absolutely refuse to listen to until the face of their money-making scheme has a Britney-Spears-in-2007 moment, and confusing anecdotes to share. Tune in!
