COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – Ohio’s Department of Education and an advocacy group have a proposed agreement to settle a 25-year-old lawsuit about the education of students with disabilities.

The Columbus Dispatch reports more than 250,000 such students are expected to benefit from the agreement aimed at improving educational support for them and raising academic achievement. The proposal still must be approved in federal court.

Under it, the state would create a plan to boost the students’ test scores and other performance measures and provide more support. It also targets school districts with high rates of segregating children with disabilities by requiring better inclusion of those students in regular classrooms in 11 of Ohio’s large, urban districts.

The case from Disability Rights Ohio had been long set aside while another school-funding case was resolved.
