The Athens Bulldogs (16-6) proved to the Logan Elm Braves (11-10) as well as everyone in attendance at Logan High School that it takes a little more than a single overtime to keep them from cutting down the net as they beat the Braves and won the Sectional Championship.

The win came following a two-game losing streak for the Bulldogs including a loss to the Logan Chieftains a week earlier in the same gym. However, tonight the Bulldogs looked revitalized, playing with a new level of intensity as they put everything on the line in order to get the win.

The Braves kept the game close the entire game with tight interior defense, but it may have been too tight as they constantly sent the Bulldogs to the free throw line. Despite frequent visits to the line, the Bulldogs struggled with free throws going 10-for-23 from the stripe.

The interior defense of the Braves couldn’t handle the Bulldogs tough interior offense composed of Isaiah Butcher and Justin Hynes. Butcher and Hynes came together to get 18 rebounds, outrebounding the Braves by five.

Hynes finished the game with 12 points and 10 rebounds whereas his teammate, Butcher, finished with four points and nine rebounds.

An Athens force to be reckoned, Elijah Williams was back in action following a minor knee injury last week, the Bulldogs played their own brand of upbeat offense. Their defensive pressure mixed their offense allowed the Bulldogs to control the pace of the game.

Williams led the Bulldogs with 13 points, five steals, and two rebounds.

The Bulldogs will be back in action Feb. 28 in the Convocation Center. Tipoff is at 6:15 p.m.
