On Thursday, July 25, the Athens County Public Library (30 Home Street, Athens) will present Seeing Jazz: America in Motion in the 1940s, featuring guest speaker Dr. Art Cromwell of the Ohio University School of Media Arts and Studies. The event will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the large meeting room in the library.

The event will allow attendees to experience the history of visualizing jazz performances from the late Swing Era to the Bebop Period; discover social and cultural connections through classic photos, “soundies” (1940s-style music videos), the short historic film Jammin’ the Blues, and more. We’ll also highlight the contributions of famed Ohio University grad Herman Leonard and his “art of jazz” photography.

Our guest speaker, Dr. Art Cromwell (Ohio University School of Media Arts & Studies), considers himself a “trans-media archaeologist” and has won numerous awards for both his teaching and documentaries.
