LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A charity group and others in Kentucky cited a local newspaper’s investigative series on child abuse as a wake-up call for the state.

The Courier Journal of Louisville reports Kosair Charities and others hosted an event Tuesday to call on the community to help combat the “epidemic.” The newspaper’s five-part series details how Kentucky has the highest rate of child abuse and neglect in the nation.

The newspaper said that 16 Kentucky children died from child abuse or neglect in 2017 and another 56 children nearly died. An independent panel found that seven cases in 2017 and 2018 were so extreme that they were designated as torture. Kosair Charities on Tuesday also announced a $100,000 donation to CASA, a nonprofit that provides volunteers in child abuse and neglect cases.
