Athens Activists Take Part In Global Climate Strike
< < Back toAthens residents met Friday at the Village Bakery to take part in the Global Climate Strike. Spearheaded by Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, the global strike involved over 4,000 events in 139 countries around the world in an effort to raise awareness about the ongoing climate crisis.
Ellie Dickerman is an Ohio University student who attended Friday’s event, and says the amount of participants is enough proof of how powerful the movement is.
“I think we’re definitely running out of time here, and we need to speed up the process and really just stop waiting for someone to tell people to go,” said Dickerman. “People need to just stand up and go. And that’s why this movement is so powerful, because people aren’t sitting still anymore.”
After a number of speeches from local activists Friday, attendees then rode their bicycles up East State Street and through Ohio University’s campus, before finishing up in front of the Athens courthouse.
An estimated 4 million people around the world took part in the Global Climate Strike.
